Day 2 Barcelona
After a relaxed breakfast we start to discover Barcelona with a tour by private bus. With our personal guide we see some of Barcelona’s iconic architectural creations by the famous “Gaudi”. We admire the Casa Batlló, one of the two great buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí on “Passeig de Gràcia”, the other being La Pedrera. From the outside, the façade of Casa Batlló looks like it has been made from skulls and bones. The “skulls” are in fact balconies, and the “bones” are supporting pillars. Gaudí used colours and shapes found in marine life as inspiration for his creativity in this building, e.g. the colours chosen for the façade are those found in natural coral. We visit inside the Sagrada Familia, one of Gaudí’s most famous works in Barcelona. It’s a giant Basilica that has been under construction since 1882 and it’s not expected to be completed for another 30 to 80 years.
After Sagrada Familia visit wander through the winding streets of The Gothic quarter enjoying the Cathedral, churches and squares, explaining the history of Barcelona with its Roman and medieval past. In this walking gourmet tour we will be stopping in speciality food shops for tastings of Catalan cheese, charcuterie, pastries, olives and chocolates.
For lunch we will be taken to some of the numerous tapas bars to sample some of the specialities of the Spanish cuisine accompanied by delicious local wines.
We then board the bus for an afternoon Panoramic Tour visiting the Castle of Montjuic and El Mirador del Alcalde The hill of Montjuïc, which means “Jewish Mountain” and is a useful point of reference. The castle on the top offers fantastic views over the city. The stunning Palau Nacional makes a beautiful backdrop to Plaça Espanya and is also known as MNAC, a museum which is home to a wide range of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque artwork including paintings, carvings, sculptures, metalwork, and enamels.
We leave the rest of the afternoon for you to relax, then meet you in the hotel to transfer to our restaurant for our evening dinner at a restaurant that boasts 180 years of service. Overnight stay in Barcelona B/L/D
Day 3 Penedès/Barcelona
After breakfast we drive to Penedès wine region. Penedès is considered the most important wine region in Catalunya (Catalonia), and is located near Barcelona. The area is known for producing sparkling Cava, which began production in the 1870s, and is produced in styles ranging from value-driven sparklers to vintage releases made in the Methode Champenoise. While these wines get most of the spotlight, the area also produces significant still whites and reds.
Penedès is divided into three regions – *Baix (Bajo) Penedès, the warmest region, with production of red wines made from Garnacha, Monastrell and Cariñena; *Medio Penedès, which has the highest amount of production, being the main source of the Cava grapes Macabeo, Paralleda and Xarel-lo, as well as reds made from Ull de Liebre (Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; and *Alt Penedès, which has the highest elevation and grows Paralleda for Cava, as well as excellent whites made from Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
We start our wine tour in in the cantina of Albet|noia a boutique exclusive winery located in a unique setting and surrounded by vineyards and nature. Arguably the first organic winery in Spain and a perfect venue for people passionate about wine and vineyards.
We return to the hotel for a little siesta after which we meet you to wander down the cobbled streets for dinner in one of Barcelona picturesque restaurants showcasing delicious Catalan food.
